Having an adequately sized thermal store is critical to the efficient and reliable operation of any solar thermal system.
There are several options available.
Stores for Domestic Hot Water Systems
These include single and twin coil water heaters. The water heaters may be manufactured from enamelled steel, copper or stainless steel. Stainless steel is generally preferred but enamelled steel is often used where low cost is a priority. Copper may be used in open vented systems.

Stores for larger Solar Heating systems
In larger systems, the store will normally contain primary heating water rather than potable water. As the primary heating water is not oxygenated, mild steel can be used for the construction of these buffer stores. Several types are available, these include:
- Steel buffer without coil
- Steel buffer with coil
- PRO-HEAT buffer with stratified charging system
- PRO-CLEAN buffer with stratified charging system
Mild Steel Buffer tanks
These are the simplest category of buffer tank. They are constructed from welded mild steel. They are normally supplied pre-insulated. Versions are available which include a heat exchange coil.
They are used as components of solar, heat pump annd biomass heating systems.
They are inexpensive and are available in sizes from 300L to 5000L as standard.
When used with solar heating systems they suffer from the disadvantage of poor heat stratification. This is due to turbulance at the connections and the use of a coil for heat exchange.

TiSun PRO-HEAT and PRO-CLEAN thermal stores
These tanks are optimised for used with solar heating. All tank connections are fitted with flaps to eliminate turbulance, which can destroy stratification in the tank.
All tanks in this range are very well insulated with minimum insulation thicknesses of 100mm.
The tanks may also be used with the TiSun stratified charging heat exchangers.
There are three ranges available:
TiSun Thermal Stores with stratified charging
These are available in sizes from 500L to 5000L. They consist of a mild steel buffer tank which can be fitted with the optional stratified charging system. They are ideal for applications where solar is combined with biomass boilers and heat pumps.

PRO-HEAT Product Range
These are also available in sizes from 500L to 5000L. They consist of a mild steel buffer tank which can be fitted with the optional stratified charging system. They also have an internal high surface area stainless steel coil for DHW heating.
The stratified charging system ensures that the warmest water is always available at the top of the tank in order to rapidly heat the domestic water.
The system also has the great advantage that the volume of stored hot water is minimised thus eliminating the risks associated with storing domestic hot water. In particular the risk of legionella infection is minimised.
These tanks can produce up to 70 L/min of hot water and are ideal for all residential and many commercial applications.

PRO-CLEAN Product Range
These are intended for larger commercial applications where there is a high hot water demand. They differ from the standard PRO-CLEAN in that the heat exchange surface area for DHW is doubled. DHW production rates of up to 150 L/min are possible. These products are ideal for hotels, nursing homes and other commercial applications.
