The selection of a Re-Verber-Ray infra-red gas-fired heating system has proved highly successful at this modern private facility. A new hangar was built in 2005 to cater for maintenance and storage of small aircraft, helicopters and luxury jets. The consulting engineer was Mr. Pat Ryan of ERCS in Rathfarnham and he was charged with ensuring that effective and efficient heating would be achieved in this large building. A number of options were considered before a radiant system was selected and subsequently installed by HVAC Mechanical Services Contractors from Finglas.

The footprint of the hangar measures almost 4,000 m2 and it is sub-divided into three separate sections. The entire front and back walls of the building are fully retractable. This provides excellent access for the aircraft but obviously presents a potential nightmare when it comes to heating this large building. Thankfully, radiant heating provides the answer as it is not dependent on raising the air temperature to achieve comfortable conditions for building occupants. The energy which is emitted from the high temperature surface of the tubes travels in a straight line until it strikes and object such as a person or the floor. Twenty eight Re-Verber-Ray U-type tube heaters were selected ensure that an even pattern of heat is achieved and that hot or cold spots do not exist

The building stands at almost 15 metres in height and as it is necessary to suspend the heaters from the overhead roof structure, the appliances were fixed at 12 metres over floor level. This mounting height might appear excessive for heating appliances but it is well within the capability of Re-Verber-Ray radiant tube heaters. A room sealed balanced flue system was specified with an individual concentric terminal being installed above each appliance. This arrangement ensures that a combustion air would enter from outside the building while products of combustion would be fully discharged to atmosphere

The temperature within the building is monitored in twelve different locations and each heater can be individually controlled. This arrangement ensures that the system is efficient to operate at all times even when just one or two occupants require only spot heating in specific areas.
