St Kierans College was founded in 1893 and it is steeped in Irish history from a time when education was only available to an elite few before its existence to today when it is a right for every person. St Kierans has an excellent academic record and, of course, it is also synonymous with the great hurling tradition which Kilkenny is famous for. The college provides a breeding ground for athletes who want to achieve excellence in this exhilarating sport. NUI Maynooth also has a college campus at St Kierans with video conferencing, computer and library facilities.

RVR are proud to be approved suppliers of high efficiency condensing gas boilers which have been installed in a number of plantrooms during a massive investment program which has been underway at the college over the past few. The Teaching Block and Sports Pavilion was changed over in August 2006 from a traditional oil-fired heating system to modern MHG Procon wall mounted boilers with a total of five appliances providing up to 375 kW of capacity. A TML 1000 (1,000 litre) 316L grade calorifier meets the domestic water requirements of the many showers and wash hand basins which are in constant use. This calorifier is fitted with a coil type heat exchanger which can deliver almost 1,900 litres per hour continuously at 60oC with an additional 1,000 litres being available during the first hour of operation.
Priests Residence and NUIM plantroom
The original plantroom which contained two old cast iron boilers serving the Priests Residence and the NUIM facility has been relocated with 5" flow and return primary pipework being used to link the secondary circuits in the original boilerhouse to the new plantroom. The MHG HT Series was selected with 2 x HT225 models providing up to 450 kW being installed within the new plantroom. A cascade management system modulates the 6 x pre-mix burners each rated at up to 75 kW to make up this total capacity when full demand is required. The firing sequence is also periodically rotated to even out the usage pattern on each of the burners &heat exchangers which will result in averaging hours being achieved to regularises the service intervals and prolong the life of the equipment.
A particular difficulty arose at the design stage with the flue arrangement as it was not acceptable for the plume which is very evident with condensing boiler to discharge at ground floor level and internal routing of flue to roof level was considered impractical. A solution was found by the fabrication of two separate twin wall (un-insulated) flues which were power coated with black paint on the outer surface to provide a more aesthetically pleasing finish for the customer (refer to picture over).
The building services engineers at St Kierans College are Noel Lawlers Consulting Engineers with Jonathan Culleton taking responsibility for the design and site supervision of all works. Blanchfield Heating from Thomastown provided the mechanical services installation team and Ronan Blanchfield was delighted with the easy of installation;particularly the HT Series which minimises the pipework and flue requirements.
