This sizing tool will give good results for most systems.
Some assumptions are made about the configuration of the system;These are as follows:
  • The expansion vessel is connected near the cold water inlet (or on the boiler return in the case of a central heating system).
  • The water supply is pressure regulated to a certain maximum cold operating pressure.
  • The precharge pressure in the expansion vessel should be 0.2 bar lower than the cold operating pressure to ensure proper functioning. Otherwise pressure fluctuation and water hammer effects can occur.
  • The ambient air pressure is 1.0 bar

This calculation can also be used for heating installations with a temperature <90 °C. In this case, replace the tank volume with the volume of water in the heating system.
